Sprint
Hill
As
we are all aware by now, the planning board granted
Sprint approval to place cellular antennas atop the
Fayson Lakes Water Tower on Cliff Trail. This decision
was made based on an ordinance, past by the Mayor
and Council which designated this area to be used.
I
believe that we can learn much by looking at our long
history. A mere 150 feet to the south-west of the
water tower lies an area which was named by our native
Indians. Slocum Barracks. This area, a rocky
cliff, overlooks the Boonton Reservoir and the valley
below. The Indians, while hunting in our area looked
for temporary refuge here because of the intense sunshine
and the barrier to north west winds. It was said that
on calm days one could keep warm in the winter without
wearing outer garments.
Another
area which lies a mere 50 feet or so from the tower
is a small wooden structure with windows overlooking
the area to our south and south west. It has been
said that this structure was built as a lookout for
our military during World War I to seek out enemy
planes.
So
goes it and our history continues. I believe we now
should name this hill in which these historical areas
occupy as Sprint Hill. By naming it Sprint
Hill our children's children can asked the question
as to why and how it obtained this name? Our forefathers
can then tell them that was the day the Fayson Lakes
Section of Kinnelon was sold out by it's town fathers.
Let
history
be a lesson to us all.
