K.A.M.E.L.O.T.
(Kinnelon Alliance: Making Encouragement the Landmark of Our
Town), the local volunteer Municipal Alliance Committee is proud
to sponsor
celebrations of Red
Ribbon Week, October 18-26, 2003 in the Kinnelon Public
Schools and Our Lady of the Magnificat school. The mission of
K.A.M.E.L.O.T.
is to provide training and resources to the residents of Kinnelon
with the
goal of preventing and reducing the use and abuse of alcohol,
tobacco, and
other drugs.
National Red Ribbon Week has been celebrated since 1986 when a
Drug
Enforcement Agent, Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, was kidnapped and
killed for
coming close to breaking up a drug cartel in Mexico. To commemorate
and
preserve his memory and further the cause for which he gave his
life, the
National Family Partnership has adopted this week to raise awareness
about
keeping children drug free. Each year more and more communities
and schools
across America use this week to educate and promote drug-free
youth.
K.A.M.E.L.O.T. is funding through grants,
a one-man show of substance abuse
and choices, called "I Am Dirt" by John Morello, which
will be performed at
Kinnelon High school on October 21. Morello's characters provide
a mirror
for the audience to see themselves and recognize the choices they
are making
daily. Although "Dirt" has a serious message, it also
makes audiences laugh
by showing the comical circumstances that surround daily life.
Students
respond to "Dirt" because it is not a lecture but rather
a play....with
characters....like them. Additionally, the Pearl R. Miller Middle
School,
students will have a presentation by Quiet Riot, a two brother
performing
partnership, who include storytelling, mime, comedy, audience
participation,
sound effects to encourage students to recognize their own resources:
imagination, instincts and feelings, interests, talents, goals
and
persistence and use the supportive elements in their lives- good
friends and
groups who encourage wellness.
Red Ribbons with drug free positive life messages have been provided
to our
schools so that students can show their support of living in a
drug free
community.
